January 2020 TBR

I realize we’re now about a third of the way through the month, but in my defense I was making a TBR game board for the first week and I was still trying to finish my last December book :/

I made a Bookopoly board, which I’m not showing off because A) I am not great at drawing (especially freehand with a Sharpie haha), B) I never got around to putting the title “Bookopoly”) on the board, and C) my board might have been ruined less than 24 hours after I finished it. I’m still too upset to really assess the damage, so I’m ignoring it and hoping it fixes itself because I spent at least 12 hours working on it and I was fairly pleased with how it turned out.

Anyway… That’s not why we’re here, but it is relevant because the board chose my TBR. I think my rules are pretty much the same as Becca’s from Becca and the Books over on YouTube (her board was one of the inspirations for creating my own), but I could be mistaken.

I don’t have a set number of rolls, because I think I’ll just feel it out every month (assuming my board is still functional). Rolling doubles means I have to roll again (as in regular Monopoly) and add an additional book to my TBR. This month, I did six rolls but two of those were doubles, so I ended up with eight rolls/books.

Because I’m still trying to finish the Winter Magical Readathon, I might have to add more books, but this is what I have so far.

The Girl in the Tower (Winternight Trilogy, #2)

Read a Library Book– For this one, I’m probably going with The Girl in the Tower by Katharine Arden. I was hoping my hold on this would come through later so I could use it for Polarthon next month, but oh well.

Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1)

Husband Picks– This one made me nervous haha. Husband picked Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (I think his reasoning was that it looked cool) and my reaction was gleefully screeching “LESBIAN NEROMANCERS IN SPACE!” at a pitch I think only dogs could hear 😛

The Spindlers

Children/Middle Grade– My Magical Readathon pick for “starts with S” works for this one, so I’m reading The Spindlers by Lauren Oliver.

Vengeance Road (Vengeance Road, #1)

Outside My Comfort Zone– I think I’ll be borrowing for this one and checking out Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman. This one was already on my TBR for 2020 because there’s a PopSugar Reading Challenge prompt to read a Western, which is outside my comfort zone.

The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics (Feminine Pursuits, #1)

Historical Fiction– Another book I have out from the library. I’ll be reading The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite which has been on my TBR for almost a year, and I finally got to the top of the holds list, yay!

The Odyssey

Community Shelf Card: (Owned) Book on Goodreads TBR the Longest– That would be Homer’s The Odyssey :/ I’ve actually read it before, but it was almost 20 years ago, so I’ve been wanting to re-read it for ages anyway. Hopefully I’ll be in the right mood.

Shades of Magic Vol. 1: The Steel Prince

Comics/Manga– Ok, I haven’t for sure chosen something or this one, but since I have gone through a few pages of Chapter 5 of the Magical Readathon to see my first couple of prompts, I think I’ll be going with The Steel Prince vol. 1 by V.E. Schwab for this one.

The Hate U Give

Chance Card– I pulled The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas for this one. I swear this book has probably been on my TBRs than any other :/

This…might be too ambitious considering I only have three weeks left in the month haha. (I’m also in a tiny slump, ugh.) But, two of these are pretty short, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m hoping to get through all of them, but it’s going to be a bit of a challenge. If I read most of them and start the others, I’ll call that a win.

What’s on your TBR this month?

Have you read any of these? What did you think of it/them?

    1. Thanks 🙂 I still haven’t looked at it because I’m a coward haha. I have decided that even if it is beyond saving, I’ll make a new one and make some adjustments to the size and stuff.

    1. I knooow haha. I feel like when it first came out, I was really excited about it (I was also reading more contemporary YA books then), but now it’s so intimidating for some reason. But, I just got the audiobook from the library to listen along while I read, so I’ll probably be starting this weekend! I might, at some point, post snippets of the board, if it isn’t totally trashed haha.

    1. It’s been on and off my TBR for a while (because it’s a western, which isn’t something I’ve been interested in reading), so I’m nervous about it haha. I absolutely adore the cover, though, and I’m hoping to enjoy it 🙂

    1. I think I keep putting off The Hate U Give because everyone seems to absolutely love it, so it’s kind of intimidating me now haha. I loved The Odyssey the first time I read it, but that was a long time ago, so I’m crossing my fingers and hoping I still enjoy it 🙂
