The Spoopy Memes Book Tag (v2)

I meant to do this right away after Emily (Embuhleeliest) tagged me (thank you!!), but I totally spaced and forgot, sorry!

Rules:

If you’d like to check out the original tag, go here! If you’d like to do that tag, do it!

  • Link back to Emily’s blog
  • Use the banner if you want, and don’t forget to copy the memes for each question!

Name a character that keeps repeating the same mistakes, despite having multiple opportunities to prevent them

Caraval (Caraval, #1)

Oh my gods, what’s her face from Caraval by Stephanie Garber! Scarlet? I wrote a whole, long-ass review about why I disliked that book, and it was mostly because of Ms. Too Stupid To Live. (I’m so sorry to any fans. That book just was not for me. I ended up liking the sequel a little more, though.)

spoopymeme2

Name a book where the characters got their just desserts

Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2)

I have been struggling with this one for so long, but I think I’m going to go with Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, even though some of the characters deserved better 😭 I genuinely can not think of a better choice right now, but I know as soon as I post this, I’ll think of like four.

spoopymeme4

Name a book that tries to put a positive spin on something terrible

The Martian

I really struggled with this one, but I think I’m going to go with The Martian by Andy Weir. Mark Watney is stranded on Mars, but makes the best of it, and it’s hilarious and also terrifying.

spoopymeme3

Name a book that delves into an existential topic

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)

This might be a bit of a stretch (my memory is getting fuzzy), but I’m going to say The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. This one actually kind of gets into a few topics that I think fall under “existential,” but I don’t want to elaborate because at least one could be a spoiler.

spoopymeme5

What trope or theme in a book do you really like that you don’t feel gets enough attention?

Uprooted

Sentient! Land! I’ve read a few books with forests and/or land that has at least some level of sentience, and I’ve loved it (even if I didn’t love other things from the books). One that isn’t a huge spoiler is Uprooted by Naomi Novik. (I did not love this book, but I did love the forest part.) Just…trees, or the actual land itself, being able to think, act, etc.? YESSSS.

spoopymeme7

Name a characters whose humor is consistently underappreciated by those around them

Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1)

I’ve now forgotten every funny character I’ve ever read, halp. Uh… Okay, I’m just going to cheat a little and say pretty much everyone from Soulless by Gail Carriger? It has been a while since my last read, but I vaguely remember thinking the characters were hilarious, but their companions were less amused.

Name a book (or two or three) that has helped you get through this year

A Night to Surrender (Spindle Cove, #1)

Ouch, this one hits home 😦 Okay, I’ve actually been in a slump a lot of this year, but… Tessa Dare’s Spindle Cove series has helped a lot. I need to pick up another of her books soon, because they always make me feel better.

What are your plans for Halloween this year if you celebrate it? How do you plan on spending what’s left of October?

I honestly don’t know, beyond my usual tradition of watching Hocus Pocus with my kid, then watching Trick r Treat by myself (or with husband, since it’s on a Saturday this year) that night. We might carve pumpkins that day, but we’ll probably do that a few days before, unless we lose track of time.

Since we won’t be going trick or treating, I thought maybe kid and I could paint our faces or do some other kind of DIY costume situation, then maybe video chat family and friends.

As for the rest of October, I plan to continue my annual horror movie marathon and finish out Blogtober. I might make a few decorations with kid, and possibly make a few of my favorite pumpkin recipes. Oh, and I’ll be voting early, probably later this week.

No pressure to do it, but I’m going to tag…

  1. This is hilarious! I love this! Thank you so much for tagging me. I just sat down to write my post for tomorrow and was searching and searching for a good Halloween tag. This couldn’t have come at a better time!

I am with you on Uprooted. The book was not for me but I always say the forest is the best thing about it!

That makes me feel so much better, thank you! Sometimes it feels like I’m the only person who didn’t absolutely love Uprooted :/
