Harry Potter Moment of the Week: September 14th

This weekly meme was created by Uncorked Thoughts and is now hosted by Lunar Rainbows.

The topic this week is: Favorite quote from Half Blood Prince?

I hate trying to choose just one favorite quote from any book, but it’s even more difficult with the Harry Potter books. I excluded amusing exchanges and statements from this (like when McGonagall asked why it was always the trio there when something bad happened), because there are always a few of those. I decided to go with something that stood totally on its own, without context from the story.

I couldn’t choose between these two as my favorite, and I’m not even sure they would still be my favorites if I re-read the book again, but they’ve stuck out to me for a long time, so…

“It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more.”

and

“Age is foolish and forgetful when it underestimates youth.”

I just really like both of these (and so many more oh my gosh), and I think they’ve resonated with me since the first time I read them.

Do you have a favorite quote from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince?

August 16th: Characters’ Fitness Routines You Want
— This can be interpreted a bunch of different ways! Fitness comes in many different packages. This can be about characters who are super fast, strong, agile, good at dancing, good at climbing, athletes, or foodies! Whatever it means to you. This is inspired by those routines you see in magazines for actors, but with more of an open mind and less body shaming 🙂

I really thought this would be an easy topic, but it turned out to be a bit of a challenge. I ended up going with 4 book characters, and one TV show character. In no particular order…

3

George or Fred Weasley from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling– Why? Because I always wanted to be a Beater. I knew I’d suck as a Seeker, probably as a Keeper, and I don’t fancy being a Chaser (although it would be my second choice of positions if I got to try out for Quidditch). But being a Beater? Heck yeah!

23437156

Inej Ghafa from the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo– I have all the grace of a drunken hippo at this point, but I’d love to be able to move like Inej. (I actually used to be stealthy, and an agile, balance beam loving, climb ALL the things! kind of kid, but then I broke stuff and now I’m an old lady.) Plus, all the knives!

22055262
Delilah Bard from the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab– I’m not even sure what to say about this one because there’s several aspects to Lila and her physical abilities. Plus, again, knives! (Apparently I have a thing for characters with knives, idk.)

28187
Almost anyone from Camp Half Blood from the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan– Learning to fight, chariot races, capture the flag, and so much more! (I would die so fast probably.)

giphy3

Sookie St. James from Gilmore Girls– Does constant bustling around a busy professional kitchen, wielding cast iron skillets, whipping things by hand, etc. count for fitness? I love to cook and I would love to be on Sookie’s level. Plus, even though Michel will never admit it, she kicked his ass at arm wrestling.

August 2nd: Book Covers You’d Live In
— We all love a good cover but what are some covers you’d like to be transported into?

I was so excited when I read this topic, because I thought it would be sooo easy. I was wrong. Very, very wrong. There are plenty of gorgeous covers out there, but it took a lot of work for me to come up with 5 that made me think, “Oh yeah, I want to be in there!” if I took the story out of the equation. Anyway, here’s what I finally settled on, in no particular order…

18079709

puffin chalk cover; links to goodreads

6799860

Camille Rose Garcia cover; links to goodreads

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll– Either the Puffin Chalk edition, or the gorgeous Camille Rose Garcia edition.

8036918

Jane Eyre cover; links to goodreads

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë– The Penguin Deluxe Classics edition, which I’ve been lusting after for a couple of years now but still don’t have 😥 I think all the books in the Deluxe Classics line are drool-worthy (or at least all the ones I’ve seen), but this one makes me want to go explore that house.

18659623

Through the Woods cover; links to goodreads

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll– This is one of my favorite book covers, and I’m definitely intrigued enough to want to explore those woods.

32890474

The Seafarer’s Kiss cover; links to goodreads

The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember– Icy (or snowy?) looking landscape with a mermaid? Yes, please! (I hate summer, ok, and it took conscious effort to not make this list with all winter landscape covers :/ )

29241319

Chamber of Secrets cover; links to goodreads

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Illustrated edition) by J.K. Rowling and illustrated by Jim Kay– I had to include a Harry Potter book on this list, but choosing just one was so hard! I finally decided to use this one.

T5W: Favorite Side Character Ships!

top-5-wednesday

T5W is a weekly meme created by Lainey from gingerreadslainey, now hosted by Sam from ThoughtsOnTomes. You can check out the goodreads group to learn more.

June 14th: Side Ships
— Tell us your favorite relationships that don’t involve the protagonist!

**Warning: Some strong language ahead in this post, if anyone’s bothered by that.**

Honestly, I’m not much of a shipper, and when I do ship, it’s usually a canon ship for main characters. (Also, I’m kind of cheating with one, and seriously cheating with another of these, but the serious cheat is the ship I’ll go down with, damn it!)

But, these are a few I came up with, in no particular order…

(All the covers link to the goodreads page for the book)

256683Magnus Bane & Alec Lightwood (from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare)

These two, ugh. They were why I mostly finished the series (I couldn’t actually make it through City of Holy Fuck This is Long Heavenly Fire, and I literally just skimmed it to get the basics because I was so done with that series), and I love them. They are my precious book children and I want them to be happy.

3Dean Thomas & Seamus Finnigan (from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling)

Ok, this is one of the only non-canon ships I’ve ever had, but I’m still including it because a) I actually ship it, b) it’s a side-characters-ship, and c) it’s such a popular ship it might as well be canon. Like, Devon Murray even tweeted about how Dean & Seamus could get married in Ireland a couple of years ago when gay marriage was legalized.

8490112Zuzana Nováková & Mikolas Vavra (from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor)

I haven’t read this in years, but I remember liking these two and wishing we’d seen more of them. (Also, I’ve only read the first two books, and I barely remember anything from the first book now :/ )

41865Jasper Hale & Alice Cullen (from The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer)

I can not believe I have a ship from those god awful books, considering how much I hated them, but the thing is, all the side characters were so much more interesting than Boring Bella and Exasperating Edward. (I’m sorry, Twilight fans, but the books were not for me, and while I hated the books, I don’t have any bad feelings about the people who did enjoy them.)

And now, my big cheat for this week…

22055262Holland Vosjik & HAPPINESS, DAMN IT (from the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab)

Do I need to say more about this one?

What are some of your favorite side ships?

T5W: Favorite Minor Characters

top-5-wednesday

T5W is a weekly meme created by Lainey from gingerreadslainey, now hosted by Sam from ThoughtsOnTomes. You can check out the goodreads group to learn more.

May 24th: Favorite Minor Characters
–Minor characters are less than a sidekick or a side character (but not in our hearts!)

I got too caught up in trying to decide who was a minor character and who was a side character, so I’ve been stressing about this for days. Finally, I just decided to go with the ones I initially thought of and be done with it. So, in no particular order, here we go…

3682

Brigid (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray)– She was the housekeeper at Spence Academy and I adored her. I thought she was amusing, but also kind of like a stern aunt or something.

6944032

Tabitha Devereaux (The Chronicles of 6696602Nick/Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon)– I don’t really remember when she shows up, but I think it’s in the first book. I also can’t remember how big of a character she was in either series, oops :/ I just remember that I really liked her.

3

Oliver Wood (Harry Potter seris by J.K. Rowling)– There were so many great characters, minor and major and side, to choose from from the Harry Potter books, so I honestly just randomly picked one minor one I liked. I’m not even sure why I liked Wood so much, but I think his obsession with quidditch was kind of comedic relief.

9460487

Horace Somnusson (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs)– Full disclosure: I can’t remember how much we see him in the series :/ I want to say he’s like on the line between side and minor character, depending on where you are in the series, but I’m including him anyway. I thought Horace was interesting, and I remember wishing we’d learned more about him in the trilogy.

22055262

Tieren (The Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab)– I almost used Hastra, but I think Hastra is more of a side character? Anyway, I liked Tieren and was interested enough in him to wish we saw a lot more of him.

Do you have any favorite minor characters?

Top 5 Wednesday: Books that Would Make Good Video Games

top-5-wednesday

T5W is a weekly meme created by Lainey from gingerreadslainey, now hosted by Sam from ThoughtsOnTomes. You can check out the goodreads group to learn more.

April 12th: Books That Would Make Good Video Games
–Since I’ve been in video game hell (in a good way) for the past year, this topic is timely. Remember, not all video games are action games! The Sims has proven that 🙂

Confession time: I don’t play many video games. I want to, but I am so bad at basically anything that isn’t Nintendo (and I suck at plenty of Nintendo games, too). So, I’m really unqualified for this topic, but I’m giving it a shot :/

22055262

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab– Ok, I think it would be so freaking cool to explore this universe and play as your favorite character.

2343715610194157

Anything from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse– I want to be a Grisha! Or break into the most secure prison in the world, or…Well, basically I want to do anything in that universe.

20170302_053540 (2)

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling– Yeah, they already exist, but I think most of us can agree that they could have been better. I want to actually take classes and stuff.

3682

Libba Bray’s Gemma Doyle trilogy– Magic! Victorian boarding school! Girls rebelling! Mystery! I may be alone in wanting this, but I still want it.

9361589

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern– How would this work? Could it work? I honestly don’t know. It’s been a few years since I read it, but I remember thinking at some point after reading it that I would like to play a game based on it.

What are some books you think would make good video games?

T5W: Books You Felt Betrayed By

March 15th- Books You Felt Betrayed By
–Beware the Ides of March! What books (or characters) did you feel betrayed by, for whatever reason…big or small.

Betrayed might be a bit strong for how I felt about a couple of these books, but it’s close enough, and certainly describes how I felt about the last one.

the-miniaturist

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton– I was so excited for this book for so long, but it really let me down. It probably wasn’t really a bad book, but I didn’t like it as much as I’d hoped to, and it wasn’t at all what I expected. More about why I didn’t like it (and what I did like) in my review.

10174795

Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan– Ok, I’m digging through my memories of this book, and my GR review, trying to remember what, exactly, bothered me because this was the first book I thought of when I read the topic for this week. I think a lot of stuff that was revealed at the end. This just…wasn’t what I expected before reading it, or even as I was reading it.

9461872

Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares– Ergh, the pain! I was a huge fan of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and they were pretty much the only YA I read while I actually was a teenager. I also re-read them a lot, and I loved the girls so much. Then this book happened and destroyed me. I actually threw this book, and it’s one of the few I’ve done that with.

77115

The Princess Bride by William Goldman– I want to love this book! I really, really do. The movie is one of my absolute favorites, so I was 100% certain this would become one of my favorite books. But no. I thought I was going to die of boredom while reading this. It took many attempts to finish it, and I kept thinking, “How was the movie so good while the book is so bad?!”

29069989

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne– The best worst for last. This book was so awful. This is another that I actually threw across the room. I hated this book, and it’s one of only a handful in my life that I’ve wished I never bought or read. I’m still angry about it and refuse to accept it as canon. This is really bad fanfic.
